The Science of Skin Color

The Science of Skin Color

At a glance, we identify people based on their unique combination of physical features – height, facial shape, skin tone, eye and hair color. Many of these are influenced by our genetic code. Linking these traits to their corresponding genetic data not only shows us why each person looks a little different, but it also helps us understand parts of our body that are less obvious to the naked eye, like blood pressure and susceptibility to certain types of cancer. In this video, Neil talks with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology’s Greg Barsh, PhD, about new research from the University of Pennsylvania on skin pigmentation and what it can teach us about other complex features, including ancestry, human migration and the concept of race.
