Huntsville, Ala. – GeneCapture, a resident associate company at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, has named Greg Thompson its Chief Operating Officer (COO) to oversee the product design, commercialization and medical device approvals for the company’s breakthrough portable rapid infection diagnostic targeted to the point of care market.

“Greg’s experience with more than a hundred medical product designs for a variety of large and small companies is extremely relevant to our current goals,” said Peggy Sammon, CEO and co-founder of GeneCapture. “He brings a depth of knowledge in product commercialization that will help us accelerate our plan. Greg’s technical and management approach matches beautifully with our team of scientists and engineers who have developed a breakthrough platform for rapid identification of pathogenic RNA signatures.”
Thompson was the former VP of Design in the Sanmina Medical Division and VP of Sanmina Global Product Design and Development. While managing the Medical Device Design Organization he implemented a Design Quality Management System to follow the products from conception through design control and commercialization. His organization developed products for a wide range of OEMs including customers such as Johnson & Johnson, Philips Medical, Siemens, and others totaling more than 50 medical device customers; and more than 100 medical devices.

While at Sanmina, Thompson worked with a number of small companies and startups to take new product ideas and business models through the concept and development phases, testing and certification, and into production. In preparation for commercialization of GeneCapture’s products, Thompson’s current focus will be to implement a fully automated sample prep process, incorporate connectivity and optimize manufacturing designs to meet their low cost/test goals.

Thompson earned a BSEE degree in Computer Engineering from North Dakota State University. He has an interest in amateur radio and operates a fully equipped radio station for local and worldwide terrestrial and satellite communications. Thompson also has a well-equipped design and development laboratory to facilitate the design, fabrication, and test of complex equipment.
