Meet BioTrain intern Brianna Graham

Science meets art: a BioTrain intern’s pursuit of a biomedical visualization career

Brianna Graham

As a sophomore in college, BioTrain intern Brianna Graham changed her biology major to a minor in order to pursue a graphic design and photography degree at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). This summer, Graham will serve as the digital applications intern for the Educational Outreach department where she is able to combine the two different disciplines to prepare for her desired career in biomedical visualization.

“I’m interested in medical illustration, also known as biomedical visualization,” Graham said. “Working here allows me to look at more of the microscopic level of science, and continue to learn how to render visualizations of those through 3-D animations, high definition 2-D drawings, and photos.”

This summer she will be working with Dr. Adam Hott, digital applications lead and expanding solutions expert for Educational Outreach, to create graphics used in a new classroom activity, Timeline Challenge, based on the Progress of Science Timeline (timeline.hudsonalpha.org). A hard copy of the timeline is located on the 3rd-floor hallway by the teaching lab at HudsonAlpha.

Graham says she will be helping create graphics and icons for Timeline Challenge. Graham believes that her exposure to Adobe Creative Cloud throughout her classes at UAH, as well as her biology background, has prepared her for this internship. Graham is optimistic that her experience in BioTrain will help her achieve her future career goals.

Graham will present her research at the annual BioTrain poster session July 27.
