That’s a wrap on this mini season about the Wiregrass Peanut Project! Throughout this season, we looked at how one unique project, powered in part by high school students, is poised to have big impacts on the peanut industry in the Wiregrass and beyond.
In this episode, you’ll hear the story of one superstar peanut that has journeyed from the classroom in Dothan, Alabama, to the greenhouse in Huntsville to Puerto Rico (via its offspring). You’ll meet the student who named and tended to the peanut, and the project manager responsible for field testing and gaining farmer interest in eventually growing the peanut line in their fields.

Meet Our Guests
Dustin Herring
Agricultural Project Manager at HudsonAlpha Wiregrass, who oversees the field trials and real-world testing for the Wiregrass Peanut Project.
Bruce Arnold
A rising senior at Rehobeth High School who participated in the project as a sophomore. His plant, which he named “Bruce,” emerged as one of the strongest lines from the entire project.
Bruce’s Beginnings: Rehobeth High School
In the fall of 2024, a science class at Rehobeth High School launched another round of the Wiregrass Peanut Project. Each student was handed a single peanut seed to plant in a cup of soil and tend throughout the semester.
One student, Bruce, decided to give his plant his own name. After nurturing the seedling, the class collected leaf samples to extract DNA. The samples were sent to HudsonAlpha, where researchers sequenced the DNA and returned a detailed genetic report to the classroom.
The students analyzed the reports, scoring their plants for critical traits like drought tolerance, pest resistance, and overall health. Finally, the class voted on the standout performer: Bruce the peanut.
Bruce dominated the rankings thanks to its strong resistance to several key pests, impressive drought tolerance, and built-in protection against aflatoxin—a dangerous toxin produced by fungi that commonly affect crops.
Bruce Travels to Huntsville
After winning top honors in its cohort, Bruce traveled north to HudsonAlpha’s campus in Huntsville, Alabama, to take up residence in the greenhouse. Once mature, researchers crossed Bruce with other top-performing peanut lines, carefully harvesting and planting the resulting seeds to create the next generation.
As the offspring grew, researchers confirmed that Bruce’s line consistently ranked at the very top for overall quality and disease resistance. The decision was clear: it was time to move Bruce into field trials.
Bruce’s Offspring Spend Time in Puerto Rico
To run a rigorous field trial, researchers needed far more seed than a single greenhouse harvest could yield. Enter Dustin Herring and a trip to Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico’s tropical climate allows for year-round farming, giving plant breeders an extra growing season each year. This extra cycle dramatically speeds up crop development and data collection.
Seeds from the Wiregrass Peanut Project, including the offspring of Bruce, were shipped to Puerto Rico for planting in winter nurseries. Earlier this year, Dustin traveled to Ponce, Puerto Rico, to harvest the mature crop.
Back to the Wiregrass!
With an expanded collection of seeds in hand, the team returned to south Alabama to launch official field trials in Headland.
Unlike the controlled, protected environment of a greenhouse, field trials test how crops hold up against real-world stressors: unpredictable weather, local pests, and resource constraints.
These trials are currently underway, with harvests scheduled for later this fall. Stay tuned for updates on how Bruce performs in the field!
