HudsonAlpha Opens Startup Incubator to Prime Biotech Entrepreneurs for Success

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology officially announced the opening of its Primer Lab – a high-impact startup incubator designed to help early-stage biotech companies overcome the prohibitive costs of launching a life-sciences venture. Made possible through funding from Innovate Alabama, the Primer Lab provides founders with access to turnkey lab facilities, top-tier mentorship, and a true concierge model of support that covers everything from strategic connections to hands-on troubleshooting.

A major barrier for early-stage and small-scale startups is the massive capital expense required to acquire specialized lab equipment and secure long-term leases. The Primer Lab addresses this need directly by offering more than 4,000 square feet of shared lab and office space tailored for startups in molecular biology, genomics, and other life-science industries. It is located in HudsonAlpha’s Paul Propst Center and will serve as a launchpad for founders transitioning from discovery to revenue generation.

“The Primer Lab is a key part of how we’re intentionally growing HudsonAlpha’s innovation ecosystem,” said Dillon Fritz, PhD, Vice President for Innovation and Economic Development at HudsonAlpha. “It gives promising biotech companies a place to take root, build momentum, and grow in Alabama, while strengthening the broader innovation pipeline across our campus and region.”

This initiative expands on a smaller-scale co-working lab, called the Shared Lab, which was piloted at HudsonAlpha in the summer of 2025. The lab supported several early-stage biotech companies and quickly outgrew its original footprint, validating the need for a dedicated, full-scale incubator.

Led by HudsonAlpha’s Economic Development team, the program offers resident startups a comprehensive support system, including:

  • Turnkey Infrastructure: Shared equipment and space tailored to molecular biology, genetics, and life-science verticals.
  • Expert Guidance: Entrepreneur in residence, alongside legal, administrative, and regulatory support.
  • Capital & Network Access: Assistance with non-dilutive grant funding applications, investor networks, and ecosystem events.
  • Workforce Development: Specialized entrepreneurship training and mentorship.

“Translating impactful research into real-world applications shouldn’t fail simply because a founder can’t afford lab equipment or a rigid lease,” says Lauren DeWitt, PhD, Innovation Program Manager and a keystone mentor for the program. “We built the Primer Lab from a founder’s perspective, giving early-stage entrepreneurs the capital equipment, mentorship, and runway they need to stretch every dollar and scale successfully.”

HudsonAlpha also runs a similar incubator in Dothan called the Grow Lab with a focus on agriculture technology.

Attracting Top Talent to Alabama’s Growing Biotech Hub

The Primer Lab launch comes as Huntsville continues to gain national momentum as a premier STEM and innovation hub, highlighted by recent major life-science expansions across the state, such as Eli Lilly’s $6 billion manufacturing investment.

To recruit high-potential ventures to the region, the Primer Lab is introducing The Helix Fellowship. These competitive fellowships are designed to engage and support companies relocating to Alabama that bring transformative technology to the ecosystem. Awardees receive a full year of waived residency fees, offsetting costs associated with relocation and growth.

Interested startups must undergo a rigorous screening process to verify their start-up status and biotech vertical. Admitted resident companies and Helix Fellows will participate in regular milestone reviews to track growth and maintain residency.

Applications for the Primer Lab and the Helix Fellowships are now open. To learn more or apply, visit hudsonalpha.org/primerlab.

The Primer Lab is located on the first floor of the Paul Propst Center on HudsonAlpha’s Huntsville campus.
Residents of the Primer Lab gain access to a full molecular lab (select benches shown here), a cell culture suite, office space, storage space, shared equipment, and various shared-use areas, like a conference room and break room.
Primer Lab residents have access to cell culture equipment, including a dedicated centrifuge, biological safety cabinets, incubators, and a fluorescent microscope.
