The former Huntsville city mayor makes a generous gift in support of HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology’s Innovation Fund

Huntsville former Mayor Loretta Spencer has long been a champion of the Huntsville community, in particular of the city’s thriving ecosystem of nonprofit organizations. Her passion for scientific discovery and the role that science plays in improving lives around the world lead her to be a steadfast supporter of HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology for many years.

Loretta’s support has helped fund a variety of HudsonAlpha’s programs, including a generous gift to endow the Loretta Purdy Spencer Chair in Genomics held by Jane Grimwood, PhD, Faculty Investigator.

After learning about HudsonAlpha’s new Innovation Fund, Loretta knew that the fund would play a crucial role in bolstering the Institute’s future discoveries and was inspired to direct her most recent gift towards it.

The Innovation Fund was designed to drive the Institute’s most transformative programs and impactful breakthroughs. Resources donated to the Innovation Fund are put to immediate use to support HudsonAlpha’s talent, improve and advance technology, seed promising new ideas, scale groundbreaking programs, and train the next generation of STEM leaders.

“HudsonAlpha is a unique gem in our community, and the Innovation Fund provides a wonderful opportunity to support its future,” said Loretta. “I am excited this gift will help give the Institute what it needs to continue making life-changing breakthroughs.”
