Physicians for HudsonAlpha host kickoff event

A big thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Jimmy Chambers for hosting a Physicians for HudsonAlpha event at their home in November. The reception was held to raise awareness about HudsonAlpha and to also increase membership in our Physicians for HudsonAlpha program.

Some 40 physicians and their spouses turned out for the event. David Bick, MD, chief medical officer and faculty investigator at HudsonAlpha, shared with them the exciting work underway at the Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine, and encouraged them to support our efforts. Proceeds from Physicians for HudsonAlpha memberships support the Hero Fund, which offsets the cost of whole genome sequencing for patients who could not otherwise afford this potentially life-changing and lifesaving service.

We are grateful to the planning committee, and especially the Chambers, for hosting such a wonderful evening, along with Iberia Bank for sponsoring the event, and the Chef Next Door for providing an amazing spread, which included made-to-order wood-fired pizzas. iHeartMedia donates proceeds from Girls and Guitars concert to HudsonAlpha Foundation

Playing to a sold out audience, iHeartMedia’s 102.1 WDRM hosted its first Girls and Guitars concert presented by Crestwood Medical Center for breast cancer awareness this past October.

Three of the hottest new acts in country music performed. Carly Pearce, iHeartRadio on the Verge Artist and singer of ‘Every Little Thing’, Raelynn, Season Two Contestant on The Voice with Team Blake, and Former American Idol Contestant, Brooke Eden sang to the sold out crowd.

In addition to supporting Tie the Ribbons, iHeart Media presented HudsonAlpha with a check for $2,000 from the iHeartMedia Girls and Guitars concert to support the Information is Power program.

“We are fortunate to have HudsonAlpha in our community and to be able to offer a service like this and someone like Redstone Federal Credit Union who is such a great community partner and continue to make this possible,” said Carmelita Palmer, market president of iHeartMedia in Huntsville.

Information is Power, a collaboration between HudsonAlpha and Kailos Genetics, offers free and reduced cost genetic cancer risk testing for men and women in North Alabama.
