HudsonAlpha Education and Administration Positions for BioTrain 2012

The following positions are available for BioTrain 2012. All positions begin June 6 and end on July 31. Most BioTrain positions are paid internship positions and include weekly professional development sessions. Applications are welcome from high school, undergraduate and graduate students across Alabama. All applicants must apply online for BioTrain and will be able to choose up to three (3) positions for which to be considered. Applications will be accepted January 15 - February 15, 2012. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Educational Outreach Internship

Description: 
HudsonAlpha Educational Outreach is seeking an applicant with an interest in biology education and/or educational outreach. The intern will assist with the collection and evaluation of digital media resources relating to genetics and genomics content. Additionally, the intern will support the staff in educational programs throughout the summer. Interns will prep laboratory spaces and materials for programs, provide support at local libraries during outreach visits and keep thorough records of educational outreach events.
Specific Requirements:

  2. A strong attention to detail.
  3. Self-directed and able to work independently.
  4. A solid foundation in word processing, spreadsheets and Internet searches.
  5. A willingness to work with students of all ages.

Sample to Sequence Internship (unpaid)

Description: 
The Sample to Sequence program is intended to introduce students at an undergraduate and/or high school level to the growing field of metagenomics and the many procedures and techniques used for its study. Students will collect environmental samples (primarily soil) and extract genetic material from the microbial inhabitants within. The 16S ribosomal DNA will then be amplified from the extracted genomic DNA and cloned into a DNA library. From this library, the amplified material will be sequenced and identified by bioinformatic techniques. Note: This is an unpaid internship. Note: This is an unpaid internship.

Communications Specialist

Description: 
The communications intern will gain firsthand knowledge about brand development. He/She will create and support the brand through mass communication channels such as print, broadcast and the Internet. Identifying target audiences, creating key messages and building products to engage and educate these audiences will be among topics covered. The communications intern will: -Track and analyze media exposure, to include archiving media hits -Support development or update of databases -Address writing assignments for a variety of outlets to include social media -Support creative services, particularly the print shop.
Specific Requirements: 
  1. Preference will be given to an applicant majoring in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or Public Administration.
